About Santa Cruz

The Spanish classes we give are held in Bolivia’s tropical city, Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Santa Cruz lies at an altitude of 400 meters above sea level. The town surprises many people in a positive way. It is by far Bolivia’s most modern city and some people may even call it ´un-Bolivian´.

In Santa Cruz you will find people of many different backgrounds. Besides the Quechua and Aymara Indian inmigrants who originally came from the western side of Bolivia, you will see relatively many people with European, Arabian or Japanese backgrounds. Nearby Santa Cruz you will find the small villages Okinawa I, II and III and also at a short distance settlements of Mennonites. The original inhabitants of the Santa Cruz region –the Guarayo´s, Guaraní´s. Chiquitano´s, Ayoreo´s etc.- are also still present in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz has more than 1 million inhabitants and many facilities. There are two airports, one of them international, banks, many kind of restaurants, craft markets, café’s, etc. All are conveniently located and very accessible. Santa Cruz is definitely the place to go out in Bolivia.

There are also many opportunities to make daytrips (or longer trips) in the surroundings of Santa Cruz. You can visit for example the village of Samaipata or make a jungle tour in Amboro National Park. You can also do a boat trip in the Bolivian Amazon, a great place to spot wildlife! If you have some more time and a little extra budget, we recommend a visit to National Park Noel Kempff Mercado. If you interests are directed more toward culture and history, you should visit the beautiful Jesuit Missions.

Whatever you choose to do, we promise, you will have the time of your life in Santa Cruz!

The city of the Santa Cruz, with a population of 1.528.683 inhabitants (2006 official estimate), is the largest city in Bolivia.

Trivia:

- The city's street layout currently consists of a concentric ring model.

- There are several Japanese-manufactured taxi cabs throughout the city. The steering wheels have been modified to the left side of these vehicles, thus earning them the name of "transformers".

- "Camba Spanish" is spoken in this region of the country, as well as in the departments of Beni and Pando.

- Santa Cruz de la Sierra is a major fashion and modeling hub in Bolivia. Cruceños pride themselves in winning the most Bolivian beauty pageant titles.
